Our History

Bailie is an old word for guardian. The Bailies of Bennachie are dedicated to preserving the natural environment, history and culture of Bennachie, safeguarding this unique landscape for future generations.

We were founded on May 7th, 1973 by Dr. Danny G. Gordon, with support from key figures including James R. MacKay, Algy Watson, Dr. James Gill, Helen Fraser, and Rev. James Wood. The Bailies of Bennachie began with just 40 enthusiasts and now boasts nearly 700 members.

History 2

Historically, we have been involved in many activities on the hill from the ever-popular Annual Picnic to being the lightning rod for the formation of the Bennachie Visitor Centre. In more recent times we have established important subgroups directed towards maintaining the paths (Work Parties), investigating the history of the hill and its people (Bennachie Landscapes Project Group) and environmental groups (Wildlife).  We have also had a strong publications arm including the annual Bailies of Bennachie Calendar.

Our Original Objectives (1973):

  • Preserve Bennachie's amenity and combat litter and vandalism.
  • Maintain footpaths and rights of way.
  • Study the geology and biology of Bennachie, protecting its flora and fauna.
  • Collect and preserve Bennachie’s bibliography.

Our Current Objectives:

  • Protect Bennachie and its surrounding landscape in Aberdeenshire.
  • Maintain and improve public footpaths and rights of way.
  • Preserve features of natural, cultural, or public interest.
  • Study and record Bennachie’s natural and cultural history.
  • Raise public awareness of Bennachie’s beauty, history, and environment, while discouraging litter and vandalism.
  • Facilitate the sharing of information about Bennachie and its surroundings.
  • Support any activity that furthers the Bailies’ mission.

Current Trustees and Sandy

We work closely with the various landowners and stakeholders. The Bailies of Bennachie is governed by a board of Trustees, who meet on a regular basis for trustee and other associated meetings.
