Bailies and the Future

Predicting the future is a fool’s game. However, we believe that some predictions can be made based on the foundations and behaviours that are underpinned at board level.

  • Provide a safe environment for volunteers to express their love and interest in the hill through work parties, archaeological digs, environmental projects, etc. We are proud of the high standards of safety and environmental stewardship that we hold dear and are very pleased that the Governance system we have developed over recent years embodies those beliefs in practice.
  • Enjoy a financially secure future for many years to come, thanks to the receipt of significant donations over the recent past. The current board is aware that anyone making a donation to the Bailies desires that their gifts are directed towards the good of the hill.  We therefore see there is a triple call on us to:
    • Invest their donations wisely in project on the hill to meet immediate demands, supplementing with grants where possible
    • Take a long view on the needs of the hill and of the Bailies so that any nest egg is protected and ideally grown.
    • Perpetuate the Bailies so that we are able to continue to attract new funds through memberships, grants and donations and to be able to commission and oversee future projects.
  • Continuing to define and, when appropriate, redefine what A Voice for the Hill means to the charity at any given time.  This motto was chosen on purpose to be both inspiring and imprecise; giving trustees, members and volunteers scope to define how to give the hill a voice for the circumstances that they find. This will manifest itself in increased ambition and doing things we haven’t done, or maybe couldn’t have even contemplated before.
  • Concentrate all of our attention on Bennachie.
  • Grow our membership base in a way that takes advantage of technology and social media.
  • We are incredibly fortunate to have over 50 years of history since our inception on May 7th, 1973. We still have the handwritten minute book and membership register.  In the 21st century, we have to adopt contemporary means of interacting with our current and future membership.
  • Maintain exemplary, respectful and proactive relationships with all stakeholders of Bennachie.
  • Conduct Board activities in an open and professional manner, commensurate with the scale of the annual budgets that we are administering.
