Environmental

Care for the environment has been in the DNA of the Bailies since their inception in 1973.

One of our original aims was: To study the geology and biology of the mountain and the preserve the flora and fauna.

Environmental 1

One of our founders, James MacKay, surveyed all the heathland, bogs and fens on the hill in 1988 and this still provides a valuable basis for monitoring changes over time. We are encouraging and training more volunteers to help us to broaden our habitat information. This will be focused on surveying, mapping, recording areas of the native types of woodland vegetation and adding more detail to the MacKay report.

We also record the wide variety of mammals, birds, invertebrates, fungi, mosses and liverworts that can be found across the area.

All our records are lodged with the North-East Biological Records Centre (NESBReC) who can analyse and present the data in ways that help us to focus our efforts. This includes information to help us to respond to any planning consultations for developments that could have an impact on the hill.

Environmental 3

Over the past 50 years, the world has changed dramatically, and environmental awareness has finally gained the importance it deserves. Encouragingly, we are seeing impressive standards of land management among local landowners. Working together with them has been key in pursuing our shared goal, maintaining the health and vitality of Bennachie’s natural environment.
