Pittodrie Longhouse Dig Week 1

Last week we got off to a great start with the archaeological fieldwork group arriving at the Longhouse. By the end of the first day, devastation to order was well on its way. A huge effort by all our volunteers saw the windfall and tree harvesting debris that covered the entire site cleared from along the walls of the Longhouse and much of the interior. Remarkably this important site has largely escaped from the devastation of storm Arwen and the harvesting machinery used to remove the timber.

By the end of our second day much of the Longhouse floor plan was revealed. Excitement ensued with the discovery of a spindle whirl and bottle neck amongst the fallen stonework from the structure's west gable end. Also, a further substantial building(?) was found, we currently have no idea what this might once have been.

Thank you to the landowner Foresight Group for allowing us permission to dig.
