A group of fourteen members of the Wildlife Group enjoyed a most interesting and informative Foraging Walk recently. Natasha Lloyd, Qualified Herbalist and expert Forager led the walk from Donview Centre and into the surrounding woodlands.
Natasha had a wealth of knowledge on many of the plants and fungi we saw and it was fascinating to hear about the medicinal and cleansing properties many of them have, which was the theme of the talk. It was very thought provoking to learn that although many are very beneficial if taken in moderation and in the correct way they also may have less desirable properties if prepared incorrectly. Some plants can also be mistaken for those very similar looking but which have the totally opposite effect. The moral of the tale is to be very careful and only forage with an expert!
Plants identified and discussed by Natasha included: Birch polypore, bugle, cleavers, clover, crampbark dandelion, dock which resulted to talking about yellow dock, ground elder, horseshoe fungus, meadowsweet, nettle, plantain, raspberry, stitchwort, strawberry and wood sorrel.
Wildlife Walks are planned regularly throughout the summer. As numbers are usually limited, these are only advertised firstly to those signed up to the Wildlife Group via the Volunteers form. If you wish to be added to this list, please sign up as a Volunteer and tick the Wildlife Group section.
