Air Crashes on Bennachie

Bennachie is the site of two notable aircraft crashes.

Westland wallace

On 3rd September 1939, the first day of World War II, an RAF Westland Wallace biplane crashed into Bruntwood Tap in fog, resulting in the deaths of the pilot and the gunner. They are officially recognised as the first military casualties of the war.

In 1952, an RAF Gloster Meteor jet crashed on Oxen Craig during a training flight. The pilot, Brian Lightfoot, was killed instantly.

A memorial plaque now marks the site of the crash on Oxen Craig, commemorating these men and their service.
